What are the wines of South

Africa

?

Vines in southern Africa have been cultivated for about 300 years. Seedlings were brought to the area by French immigrants. This is where the European element comes from in South African wines. They can resemble wines from France, although they are much fruitier than them. Since 1973, South African wines have been classified by place of origin. Wine of Origin is essentially where the grapes came from. If we have a grape varietal listed on the label, it means that the wine must have been made from 75% of that variety, or 85% - in the case of export wines.

International varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, or chenin blanc also called steen here are grown in southern Africa. However, one red wine varietal has become most famous. It is the hallmark of South African wines. It is Pinotage, which yields wines that are full-bodied and rich. It is characterized by distinct accents of berries, cherries, herbs and also banana peel. It was created in 1925 by crossing pinot noir with cinsault. Abraham Perold of the University of Stellenbosch bred the variety first. Today, Pinotage accounts for as much as 6% of South African wines. In addition, there are bubbles in Africa. Sparkling wines from South Africa are referred to as Cap Classique and called the South African version of champagne. This is because they are created using the classic method. They can be produced anywhere in the country.

Stellenbosch - formerly famous for its cattle and grain farming. Today it is the most famous wine region in southern Africa. It is divided into five districts: the Simonsberg, Bottelary, Devon Valley, Papegaaiberg and Jonkershoek Valley. The vineyards are rarely irrigated, giving the wines a more concentrated flavor. Besides, Stellenbosch is considered one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. It can be admired by navigating the special Stellenbosch Wine Route.
