We invite you to explore the list of wines from Portugal, where detailed descriptions, high-quality photos and opinions of our customers will help you choose the right bottle.

Types of Portuguese winesIn

Portugal we have 14 wine regions and 31 appellations of controlled origin. The country was one of the first to introduce a vineyard classification system, defining the boundaries of first Douro and then Vinho Verde. Depending on where they are produced, Portuguese wines can vary significantly in flavor. In the north, more crisp and light wines are made, while in Madeira we have fortified and sweet wines of the same name as the island. On the labels of wines from Portugal, we will most often see such names or abbreviations as vinho de mesa - this is table wine, vinho regional (VR) is regional wine or denominação de origem controlada (DOC equivalent to the French AOC) - being the highest in the classification of Portuguese wines. Bottle prices can also vary. It is rare to find single-varietal Portuguese wines. Most of them are coupés. Some are blends of as many as 10 or 20 varieties.

Recommended wines from PortugalThe most popular

wine from Portugal to know is Porto. It is fortified and usually sweet. It is created by adding brandy to the wine. Although it is usually red, white versions are also available on the market. Approximately 100 types of grapevines are approved for Porto production. However, it is most often produced from: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz. There are several types of Port: Ruby - is the most basic, aged in barrel, Tawny - is a softer version of Ruby, which spends more time in barrel, LBV or Late Bottled Vintage - is a vintage Port, late bottled - usually after about 4 - 6 years or White Port, which is a white Port. On Vinezia.co.uk, the best reputation for fortified Portuguese wines is Graham's Fine Ruby Port, which is a basic sweet Port.

Another fortified wine from Portugal is Madeira. It is made on the island from which the alcohol takes its name. Production is similar to that of Porto, that is, brandy is added during the fermentation of the wine. However, later the whole thing is additionally heated to further fix it. This ensures that the wine does not spoil even after many years. Madeira can be sweet as well as dry. It is mostly made from the Tinta Negra variety. It is not yet as popular as Porto, hence it cannot be bought everywhere. You should look for it where there is a large offer of Portuguese wines in the store, preferably in a specialized one. On Vinezia.co.uk you can find three types: semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet.

A completely different style is presented by Vinho Verde, which also belongs to the symbols of Portuguese wine. It is light and very refreshing. Its popularity grows especially in summer. It is drunk young, hence it has the term "green wine." Like most Portuguese wines, it is made from mixing together several varieties. The most commonly used are: Alvarinho, Loureiro and Arinto. White Vinho Verde can be slightly carbonated or frizzante, but there is also a red version, consumed primarily in Portugal.
