Characteristics of the grapePinotage

, despite the fact that it is a cross from the grapes of Burgundy and Rhône, the wines are different from those coming from those very regions. Thanks to full sun and the perfect African terroir, the fruit becomes ripe and very concentrated, and the wines have a characteristic slight roughness, bold tannins with a sweet, smoky note on the finish. Thanks to the thick skins, the wine has a dark or even very dark color. The Pinotage grape gives wines with good body, harmonized, rich in tannins with pleasant medium acidity. The taste of these wines is quite strongly marked by alcohol

.Cultivation of the strainWines

from the Pinotage strain are quite easily treated to enrich the aromatic profile. They can age for years, although they are ready to drink relatively quickly. Barrel-aged versions also have a lot of cocoa, tobacco and smoky notes, like the smell of campfire or smoked meat. The fruit is naturally rich in tannins, which can be tamed with limited maceration time. The Pinotage grape is easily blended with other varieties, such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon, which is why we often find it in wine coupage. Most often, popular and quality, dry wines or outstanding wines aged in barrels are made from this

strain.History of the strainIt

is to southern Africa that Pinotage owes its origin. It is one of the few types of varietals with a very precisely described origin. Pinotage was created by South African scientists in the early 20th century. The originator and discoverer was Abraham Perold. His goal was to create a varietal from which wines would taste like Pinot Noir, while enduring in the specific climate of South Africa. The first bottles of wine from the Pinotage varietal were made in 1959. For a while the variety went unnoticed, but today it is extremely appreciated and very fashionable. Currently, it is grown not only in South Africa. Small-scale cultivation can be found in Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, the USA and Germany, among others

.Combining with foodWhen combining

Pinotage with food, you need to reach for dishes with a strong texture and distinct flavors. Roasted meats and smoked meats will be ideal in this regard. Due to the characteristic smoky accents, any type of meat will work: game, lamb, poultry, beef, pork. Curry dishes, Mexican cuisine, Indian cuisine, Cuban cuisine, dishes such as mushroom risotto or cheeses like Camembert, Brie will also be a good idea. The Pinotage grape is a great choice for lovers of bold, barbecue-friendly wines. Tasting them, we can feel the true African climate.
