History of the Malvasia strainMalvasia

is one of the oldest grape varieties, and its name comes from the Greek town of Monomvasia (Peloponnese). In the Middle Ages, the place functioned mainly as a seaport for the export of wine, and the liquors created from the fermentation of the malvasia strain enjoyed a reputation to such an extent that the name of the port was changed precisely to Malvasia.

Due to its popularity, the malvasia strain began to be cultivated in Italy, Spain, and Madeira, among others. According to contemporary research, there are at least 18 different and significant varieties whose basic name contains the word malvasia. There are more than 100 synonyms with different flavor profiles in different countries. The grape is also produced in a variety of styles: from sparkling wines to passito in every color

.Cultivation of the malvasia grapeThe grape is best

adapted in warm Mediterranean climates. Although it is grown all over the world, it has become the dominant variety in very few places, because it is a difficult vine to grow - sensitive to disease, yielding low yields. It ripens best in dry climates, with vineyards set on sloping terrain. The fruit is medium-sized, with light yellow, delicate skin and soft flesh.

The grape is grown extensively in Italy, and one of the most emblematic appellations is Malvasia delle Lipari DOC, produced in Sicily. Cultivation of the grape can also be found in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Puglia, Basilicata, Piemonte, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Sardinia. Malvasia is equally popular in Spain, but in that region it is used primarily in coupés. Percentage-wise, the largest crops are in the Canary Islands, especially in Lanzarote and the Valencia region

.Taste and aroma of malvasia winesThe

majority of liquor comes from white grape varieties. The wines are characterized by lightness, crispness and low acidity. Among the aromas one finds a bouquet of honeysuckle, jasmine and tropical fruits. There are also notes of ripe pear, citrus, peach, honey, anise and Asian spices. Sweet malvasia wines are characterized by aromas of apricot, gooseberry, vanilla, roasted almonds, pineapple, caramel, ginger. They also have a thicker texture.

Red grapes produce wines characterized by a bouquet of dried roses, orange peel, ripe plums, candied red currant, dark chocolate, baking spices and black tea. They are light, with balanced tannins and medium acidity. Fortified wines (Portuguese Madeira, for example) are distinguished by intense smoky notes. As the varietal ages, the wines take on a nuttier aroma.

For both white and red grapes, the malvasia varietal is blended with other varieties, resulting in more aromatic and complex wines.
