Several years ago, genetic studies proved that furmint is a natural cross between the old variety gouais blanc (also known as heunisch weiß) and alba imputotato. The affinity with gouais blanc has been proven before. The natural descendant of the variety is another classic Tokaj variety, hárslevelű, and breeders have derived several new ones from furmint, most notably the Hungarian variety zéta (oremus)

.Cultivation of the Furmint grapeFurmint

is a very widespread grape in the Tokaj wine region, occupying more than 70% of all vineyards there. In 2006, of the 4006 hectares of vineyards in Hungary, as much as 97% were in the Tokaj area. In addition to this region, furmint is also grown in the vicinity of Pécs and as a basic variety in the Somló region, where furmint reveals its other face - dry wines are made from it. The grape is often blended with the more aromatic hárslevelű variety, sometimes also with muscat blanc à petit grains. Furmint is also grown in Austria, but on a small scale - in 2009 there were barely 8 hectares in Burgenland, around Lake Neusiedl 2.62 hectares. The prognosis is optimistic, however, and it is likely that cultivation in this country will increase in area. The grape is also grown on the Slovak side of the Tokaj hills; wines made from the furmint grape there are created in a similar style to Hungary's, but a bit more subdued. Slovenian winemakers also create dry wines from furmint, in some years sweeter, but it is found here under the name ąipon. Crops in 2009 reached 694 hectares. The variety is particularly important in the Podravina region.

Furmint can also be found in the coastal part of Croatia (where it has the name po±ip or moslavac), as well as Romania, Australia and South Africa

.Characteristics of the Furmint gra

peThe grape is harvested in the second half of October. The grapes contain a high sugar content, but also retain good acidity. An additional advantage of furmint grapes is their susceptibility to infection by Botrytis cinerea, a noble mold. Its action causes the grapes to later yield a very aromatic, sugar-rich juice. This is what makes furmint and two other local varietals, hárslevelû and sárga muskotály, the world's best sweet wines. Some Aszú 6 Puttonyos or Aszú Essencia wines can be aged for decades to delight later with an unparalleled palette of flavors and aromas. They represent completely unique, collector's items.

Sweet or dry, furmint wines are gaining a growing number of followers. They combine fruity aromas of pear, lime, green apple, peach, apricot, as well as touches of butter, toast, hazelnut and clove. They are round and full-bodied, with a pronounced density and minerality. There's also the fact that furmint wines are very culinary- depending on the style and age, dry furmint will go well served with dishes with a pronounced spiciness, such as Asian dishes, roast poultry or fish. Sweet furmint wines are, of course, dessert wines, worth pairing with a piece of cake, ice cream or other desserts. It also pairs well with blue-veined cheeses and foie gras. Although often bought, it is worth trying a single-vineyard furmint wine, it certainly will not disappoint.
