A distinctive feature of Burgundy is the huge parceling out of plots of land - narrow, long vineyards are a common sight. Because of this, wines in Burgundy rarely come from a single parcel of land, and are bought by larger producers such as Drouhin, Jadot or Latour.

Burgundy wines have four grades of quality classification. The lowest, and lightest in flavor, is AOC Bourgogne - it means that the wine was made in Burgundy. Coming from one of the 42 villages, the wine will be named after it, e.g. Pommard. You will also find excellent Premier Cru and world-class Grand Cru wines.

What varieties are grown in Burgundy?

Four grape varieties reign supreme in Burg

undy:
  1. Pinot Noir:
  • Pinot Noir is Burgundy's king among red wines. It is a grape variety known for its delicacy and elegance.
  • Burgundies made from Pinot Noir are characterized by their light color and subtly expressed aromas of red fruits, such as cherries, strawberries and raspberries.
  • These wines often exhibit notes of spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as subtle earthy tones and sometimes even truffles!
  • The best Pinot Noir are those from the Côtede Nuits, and the best value for money can be found in the Côte Chalonnaise appellation.
  1. Chardonnay:
  • Chardonnay is the most popular white variety grown in Burgundy. The most famous for Chardonnay production is Chablis, located in the north of the region.
  • In the north, Chardonnay is mineral, very dry, and the flavor is dominated by flowers and citrus, while in Burgundy's more southerly regions(Côte de Beaune, Mâconnais) Chardonnay wines will be more fleshy and fruity.
  1. Gamay:
  • Gamay is the variety for which the Beaujolais region, located in southern Burgundy, is famous.
  • Wines from Gamay are more light and fruity compared to Pinot Noir, with distinct aromas of red fruits such as cherries and blackberries, as well as pears and spice.
  • They are characterized by vibrant acidity and are often sold just after production(Beaujolais Nouveau)
  1. Aligoté:
  • Aligoté wines are more delicate than Chardonnay, with citrus and floral notes and more pronounced acidity.
  • They are often served as an aperitif and pair well with local snacks.

How to pair Burgundy with food?

Wines from Burgundy are perfect for pairing with local cuisine. Warm wines from the north of Burgundy with great power will easily break up filling dishes such as beef Burgundy. Delicate Chablis and sparkling Cremant go well with shellfish
