Ideal wine for desserts based on creams

Fluffy cream and vanilla creams with notes of butter will feel perfectly among white wines. Both sparkling classics headed by Champagne, as well as sweet dessert wines from grapes blighted by noble mold - here, for example, the famous Sauternes or Tokaji - will be the perfect complement to a creamy dessert. Looking for a light and interesting combination, in this case it is also worth reaching for Moscato d'Asti, a lightly sparkling wine from Piedmont characterized by a sweet taste and a low alcohol level of around 5%.

The perfect wine for chocolate desserts

The intensity of chocolate-based desserts calls for more radical choices. In the context of extremely sweet desserts, a bottle of fortified wine such as port, sherry or madeira may be the best option. The dense texture, high alcohol content and richness of aromas will complement and enrich the tasted delicacies. In the case of a slightly more dry, but still based on chocolate, we can even reach for a dry wine whose dominant aromas remain consistent with the dessert. An Australian shiraz or a California zinfandel should pass the test during such a pairing.

Ideal wine for fruit desserts

Refreshing fruits enriching the dessert with their aromatic bouquet and a crisp, sometimes slightly acidic element ask for wines equally aromatic with a perfect balance between acidity and residual sugar in the glass. Here riesling comes to the rescue, whose level of sweetness we can adjust to our own preferences through its remarkable versatility. The right Kabinett or Spatlese from Germany will be an ideal partner, but an Alsatian gewurztraminer may be an equally good direction.

The best wines are the ones we like

For the best pairing, it's always a good idea to consider factors such as acidity, wine sweetness and wine structure. However, it is equally important that the chosen bottle tastes and pleases us, so when choosing a dessert wine for a cake, sweet snacks or a favorite sweet dessert, we can take into account our favorite flavors, which in such a combination may turn out to be a completely new discovery.

Types of dessert wines

Dessert wines are often sweet or semi-sweet wines, usually served with cakes and desserts. We can distinguish the following wines:

Liqueur wines(fortified wine) - a very strong dessert wine made by breaking the fermentation of sweet grapes and adding alcohol. The wine is also sometimes sweetened with raisins. An example of such a product is Hungarian Tokaj.

Vermouth - dessert wine full of herbs and spices. Most often sweetened with sugar, but also not infrequently with caramel. The name comes from the German word Vermut, meaning wormwood. Alcohol content from 12% to 20%.

Straw wine - dessert wine made from dried grapes on straw mats. This process concentrates the natural sugar in the grapes and stops the loss of acidity.

Ice wine - made during the harvest of frozen grapes, where frozen water remains in the grapes during pressing. The small amount of squeezed juice is a concentrate with a high sugar and aroma content.

Botrytis wine (mold wine) - this is a wine that is allowed to mold to eventually develop the sweet aftertaste of dessert wine. How is this possible? The noble mold causes water to evaporate from the skin of the grapes concentrating the sweet taste and aroma of the dessert wine.

Naturally sweet wines - the creation of such wines uses grapes rich in sugars, which are harvested very late so that they can ripen strongly.
