History of the Dornfelder strain

The Dornfelder variety is due to German winemaker August Herold. He combined the Helfensteiner strain with the Heroldrebe variety at the Weinsberg Institute in 1955. However, the strain was not registered until 1979, and was named after the founder of the Institute, Immanuel August Ludwig Dornfeld, who educated about German wine, organized tastings and was involved in promoting German wines. As can be seen from the difference in the years in which the variety was discovered versus registered, it took a while for the Dornfelder strain to become widespread among winemakers. At first, it was only added to lighter red wines for a darker color. Today the variety is grown in all regions of Germany, with the most popular in the Palatinate region. The area of vineyards planted with this variety reaches 8,000 hectares, and Dornfelder is the second most widely grown variety in all of Germany, just behind Pinot Noir.

Dornfelder - cultivation

The Dornfelder variety is in high demand because of its hardiness and low sensitivity (except for frost sensitivity). If the winemaker does not use green harvesting and does not cut the grapes to reduce their number, this strain will be very prolific, which will translate into wine quality. Many winemakers, however, choose to undercut while the grapes are ripening, which helps concentrate the aromas in the remaining fruit. The fruit is built quite loosely, making it less susceptible to mildew. Planting should be in areas that are not at risk of frost, as the fruit ripens late.

Characteristics of the Dornfelder strain

The variety is an example of the fact that Germany is famous not only for its excellent white wines. Originally, the strain was used in blends with other grape varieties, but upon closer inspection, at this point it is more often grown as a single variety. Dornfelder is mostly found as a dry red wine, but we can meet in two of its variants. The first variant is filled with fruity aromas, including cherries, black currants, blackberry and lilac notes. The second variant, on which the winemakers rely, is matured in small or larger oak barrels, which suppresses the fruit aroma and emphasizes the tannins and structure of the wine.

Taste and aroma of Dornfelder wine

Dornfelder wine from Germany is characterized by its deep and intense color and high acidity. As for quality, it depends on the fertility. The lower the fertility, the Dornfelder wine will be sweeter, more concentrated, delicate, fresh and rich in floral aromas and a bouquet of red fruits such as the aforementioned cherries and black currant flavor. In the taste, we will find cranberries, blackberries, cherries, notes of black currant and, in addition, lilac. If we additionally have barrel interference, Dornfelder red wine will receive flavors of cocoa, spices and roasted almonds.

Pairing Dornfelder wine with dishes

Dornfelder wine goes well with many dishes. A young dry wine will go well with a variety of pastas. Wines with higher acidity and pronounced tannins will be a good companion to roast meats, beef, game, pork, but also to spicy dishes and intense cheeses. A dry wine will also do extremely well in the company of good quality chocolate and grilled dishes. It is also worth noting that the fruits of the Dornfelder varietal alone make a delicious dessert.

Dornfelder wine - price

Theprice of wines from the Dornfelder variety vary greatly from wine to wine. Younger wines, without the interference of oak barrels will be slightly cheaper than those wines that have been aged in oak. In addition, the price of wines of this varietal is affected by the green harvest carried out by the winemaker. Thanks to the green harvest, the remaining grapes are more concentrated which is also reflected in the higher price.
