Australian wines - cultivation and vinification

The history of Australian winemaking began in the 17th century, but the most important stage of development and international expansion occurred in the 1970s. Australia is now ranked as the seventh largest wine producer worldwide and the fourth largest exporter.

Wine grapes are grown in almost every part of Australia. The most important wine lands are South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and Western Australia, which together make up almost 70 regions. New wineries are being established and the number of regions is increasing all the time.

Australian winemakers are very keen on using new technologies and making changes to make Australian wines of ever-increasing quality. They pay special attention to increased use of water in irrigation systems, as many vineyards are found in dry interior areas. In doing so, they make sure that eradication of diseases is always done in an environmentally friendly way, and that Australian wines are characterized by their naturalness and good taste.

Vines are grown mainly in South Australia, where summers are cool enough. This allows the grapes to develop flavor and aroma compounds before they need to be harvested due to excessive sugar content and insufficient acidity. It is worth noting that wines from South Australia are very popular.

The Australian wine industry is highly mechanized. Due to the hot weather, harvesting often takes place at night, and the grapes and must are refrigerated. Reductive vinification is the norm, involving special protection from oxygen from the air. Many vineyards have never been attacked by phylloxera, making it more common than anywhere else to find Australian wines from vines more than a century old. As a curiosity, we will add that Prohibition has never been implemented in Australia.

Wine regions

Australia's best-known and most appreciated by consumers regions are:

  • Barossa Valle - home of the best Shiraz wines. Australian wines here are well-structured, flinty, velvety, with intense flavor and rich fruit notes. The icing on the cake is the soft tannins.
  • Eden Valle - adjacent to the Barossa Valley, with a slightly cooler climate. The most popular Australian wines are excellent Rieslieng wines.
  • Mclaren Valle - thanks to its Mediterranean climate, it is an excellent place for many varieties, among which the best are Shiraz, GSM, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Clare Valle - the second region making ideal Australian wines from the Riesling varietal. Australian wines here are characterized by subtlety and freshness of aromas, light structure and great acidity. They are crisp and refreshing.
  • Coonovarra - the number one place for Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Australian Cabernet Sauvignon wines are known primarily for their good structure, classic profile and unusually intense notes of eucalyptus and menthol.
  • Hunter Valley - in this region, Australian wines are known for their round structure and low alcohol content. The wines are long-lived, mineral and subtle, often from the Semillon varietal. Aged for about 5 years in oak barrels, these Australian wines develop a wonderful oak aroma, with a honey-lime aftertaste.
  • Margaret River - the most famous region of Western Australia. Australian wines Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc dominate here.
  • Tasmania - cool climate yielding excellent Australian Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Despite small production ranked among the best and closest to the original classics.

Red Australian wines

The most popular Australian wines with intense aromas of fruit and blackberries are made from the Shiraz grape. In contrast, oak barrels produce a full-bodied wine, characterized by an additional higher alcohol content and stronger spice aromas.

An equally popular varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon, which together with Syrah forms the most popular multi-strain wines. Australian wines created in this way are aromatic, rich and taste simply insane. The wind level is achieved especially in the Coonawarra and Margaret River regions.

Another well-known type of wine from Australia is "GSM", a combination of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverde varietals. They refer to the classic wines of the southern Rhone Valley. Also worth mentioning is Pinot Noir, which is made thanks to the great commitment and passion of the producers. Especially from Tasmania and Victoria, these Australian wines are of very high quality.

Australian sparkling wines are also becoming increasingly well-known, and another curiosity is the wines created on the continent that are labeled "Port", which, however, are not allowed to be sold in EU countries.

White Australian wines

White Australian wines are largely derived from the Chardonnay grape variety, while another popular grape variety is Semillion. Together, the two varietals form one of the best-known types of straw-colored wines, characterized by juicy fruit aromas.

White wines from Australia are often drunk young, but increasingly winemakers are producing wines with aging potential and Australian quality wines. In recent decades, the base of the most famous and desirable white wines has become Riesling. The best rieslings are produced in the Clare and Eden Valleys.

Regardless of the type of wine, it is always worth reaching for wines from Australia, which are valued for their intense flavor and aroma, especially when aged in oak barrels. They delight our palates and are recognized on the world market. They will appeal to those who appreciate tropical fruits in white wines and velvety and soft tannins in red wines.
