Aglianico - the origin of the strain

It was believed that Aglianico has a Greek origin - its name is a derivative of the word "Hellenic". Recent DNA studies, as well as etymological and historical research, suggest that the grape originated in southern Italy. It is currently found in the regions of Campania and Basilicata. Popular synonyms are: Agliatica, Ellenico, Ellanico, Gnanico, Uva Nera.

Aglianico wines

Young Aglianico wines are characterized by spiciness, tannicity and higher acidity. As they mature, soft structure and fruity accents begin to show. Due to its character and lush yields, the Aglianico varietal is often a component of a coupage, especially in company with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietals.

Aromas include white pepper, black cherry, plum, blueberry, blackberry, dried cranberry, raspberry and strawberry. Of the earthy accents, you'll detect aromas of soil and mushrooms (including black truffle). During the tasting you will also find cocoa, nutmeg, cinnamon, coffee, licorice and dried oragano and a smoky note.

Aglianico wines - pairing with food

The character of Aglianico wine works well when pairing with food. Due to its high acidity, it pairs very well with Barbecue sauce. Intense tannin goes well with red meat e.g.: grilled beef or smoked pork. It is a great companion to cheeses e.g.: Pecorino, Grana Padano, Cheddar or Provolone, and will do well with a vegetarian dish such as one based on roasted mushrooms or cauliflower.
