Riesling wines

The Riesling grape variety is a white grape variety that has its roots in the Rhine Valley in Germany. Although it is most widely cultivated and known in this country, excellent interpretations of the Riesling grape can also be found in France, where Alsatian Riesling, exceptionally prized for its extraordinary elegance and complexity, rules. Exquisite wines can also be found in Austria (Kamptal, Luxembourg), Italy (Alto Adige and Piedmont), Bulgaria, Australia, the USA (Finger Lakes region, states of Washington, New York and Michigan), or the homeland of Savignon Blanc- New Zealand. In Poland, too, we can find grapes of this wonderful wine.

Until about a century ago, Riesling had its heyday. Interest declined when this noble wine began to be counterfeited and sweetened. The taste and aroma it gave off in nature was modified and even disappeared. As a result of these changes, people stopped tasting and reaching for wines from this varietal so eagerly. Nowadays, Riesling is returning to favor and starting to gain in popularity. Who knows if in a while it will not overtake its famous white brothers in popularity.

Although it is most widely grown and known in Germany, excellent interpretations of the Riesling strain can also be found in Australia, New Zealand or the USA. The Alsatian Riesling, prized for its extraordinary elegance and complexity, also enjoys exceptional recognition.

Origin - Riesling strain

The Riesling strain is associated with Germany, and it is there that its roots can be found - from a combination of several Rhenish grape varieties (gouais blanc, a descendant of traminer and a wild variety). At the time of its greatest popularity, it beat even wines from Bordeaux in price.

Taste and aroma of Riesling wine

As for the Riesling varietal, the wine made from it will vary depending on the climate and country of origin. German Riesling is famous for its balanced fruit and mineral aromas. Alsatian Riesling, on the other hand, are dense wines, enveloping the palate, but are also strongly dry with high acidity. They are matured in steel tanks, never in oak barrels. Wines from this varietal made in the New World, that is, Australia and New Zealand are valued for their oily structure and citrus aromas when young , as well as for their balance in terms of freshness and acidity as they mature. Rieslings from grapes affected by noble mold in Australia and New Zealand are characterized by the wonderful complexity of the aromas present.

Austrian Riesling is characterized by a long finish with a pronounced aroma of white pepper. Rieslings from the States are often sparkling, while in Canada it is popular to use the Riesling varietal for ice wines. Note how versatile Riesling is. Despite the differences in wines depending on the country of origin, it should be said of all Rieslings that their characteristic aromas are green, fresh apples, citrus, peaches and apricots. The best Riesling wine can also smell of wet stones, kerosene or honey. Wines from this varietal have wonderful aging potential, some vintages can mature for up to 20 years.

Riesling varieties

Riesling varieties in German winemaking: Kabinett - classic harvest; Spätlese - later harvest (more sugar in the grapes through longer ripening on the vine); Auslese - this type of wine is characterized by a more careful selection of the ripest berries, and some of them may be affected by noble mold, which definitely turns up the richness of flavor and refinement of the drink. The above types of Riesling (Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese) can be dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet wines. A helpful clue on the label is the word "trocken," which means "dry." In addition, we can meet designations: Beerenauslese (BA), Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA) and Eiswein. In the case of the first two, we are assured that it will be a sweet Riesling, created from carefully selected and affected by noble mold grapes. The price shelf of these wines from the Riesling varietal is already expensive or very expensive items. Eiswein - harvested in winter, where the grapes are frozen, very ripe and have a lot of sugar in them, so they are also sweet wines.

Pairing Riesling wine with food

Riesling wine, being very versatile, will go well with a variety of dishes. It will wonderfully enhance the flavor of fish dishes, white meat or vegetables, such as stewed. It will also work well with light pastas and cream-based sauces. A semi-dry Riesling will go well with seafood, while a sweet one will, of course, taste best accompanied by desserts.

Price - Riesling varietal wines

Riesling wines have a very wide price range. The prices of the wines presented on Wine.co.uk range from PLN 29.99 to PLN 830. A definite advantage is the value for money - you can buy this white wine at a very reasonable price and feel great pleasure from the amount of different flavors and aromas.
