A brief history of the region

Until the phylloxera outbreak, Rioja remained a relatively unknown small wine region. However, in 1864, when French vineyards were devastated by phylloxera, winemakers from Bordeaux arrived to import wine. Rioja, however, quickly became a second home for them, where they could produce excellent wine.

In 1926, Rioja became the first region in Spain to receive the prestigious DO status. Since then, winemakers have gradually abused barrel, especially American barrel, bringing Rioja wine to a caricatured state. Today, however, things are different, and wine from the Rioja region is harmonious and truly delicious.

What is Rioja Reserva?

On the labels of wines from the Rioja region we can find several designations: cosecha, crianza, reserva and gran reserva. They denote the minimum time a wine must spend in barrel, in bottle and how long it must pass before being released to the market. Here's how each category is represented:

  • Cosecha (also called Génerico) - no minimum, it is a young, freshly made wine
  • Crianza - a minimum of 12 months in barrel and a minimum of 24 months overall
  • Reserva - minimum 12 months in barrel, minimum 6 months in bottle and minimum 36 months total
  • Gran reserva - a minimum of 24 months in barrel, a minimum of 24 months in bottle and a minimum of 60 months total.

What does Rioja wine taste like?

Rioja is a very diverse region, despite fairly detailed production standards. Several red varieties are used to make Rioja red wine: Tempranillo, with increased acidity, moderate alcohol levels and a dry flavor profile; Graciano, which adds acidity to the coupage; Garnacha (Grenache), which enhances fruitiness and alcohol levels; and Mazuelo, which adds color, alcohol and aging potential.

Depending on the coupage, the Rioja wine will be dominated by red and dark fruits, as well as herbs, vanilla, chocolate and spices. In addition, the longer it is aged in barrels, the more aromas will come just from the barrel: vanilla, coconut, chocolate, cane sugar.

What to pair a wine from the Rioja region with?

Due to its crisp acidity and powerful aroma, a good Rioja will perfectly break through heavy meat dishes. Cosecha tower is ideal for drinking solo, as is Crianza, although it will go well with tomato-based sauces, roasts or heavier vegetable dishes. Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva will require a multi-course dinner, as their character changes with time spent in the glass.

What were the best vintages of Rioja wine?

The 2019 crianza, rated as high as 91 points, is worth trying! Gran Reserva from 2015, 2012 or 2010 are also noteworthy. Subsequent vintages are rated much lower by severe weather conditions and changing trends. The 2005 and 2004 Rioja wines are worth tasting, the earlier ones have unfortunately rather lost their potential.
