White Dry Slovenia
The perfection and diversity of Slovenia's climate in the context of viticulture is due to its location. It is bordered to the north by Austria, from which it is separated by the Alps, to the west by Italy and the Adriatic Sea, to the east by Hungary, and to the south by Croatia. The continental climate with hot summers and cold, dry winters influences the fertile crops that produce notable wine. The country's small size, however, means that most bottles remain in the country for personal consumption, and this affects the limited popularity of Slovak wines.

Characteristics of Slovenian winesThe

Primorska region, located along the border with Italy, features many varietals that are also grown on the other side, in Italy's Friuli. Thus, such grapes as Rebula, Sauvignon, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Rebula, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified, which produce dry, well-structured wines, but attention should also be paid to Malvazije, which produces an aromatic wine with notes of peaches and flowers, with a slightly sweeter finish.

In the east of the country is the Podravje region, located in the top 4% of world locations in terms of excellence in viticultural conditions. This makes Slovenia's wine production here truly outstanding. Among other things, exquisite white wines from iconic varietals such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Traminac and Furmint reign supreme, but also exquisite reds from Pinot Noir.

Slovenia's sparkling winesThe

country also produces outstanding sparkling wines, famed for their production from grapes left on the bushes until frost, in order to obtain juice with maximum sugar concentration when the juice is squeezed from the frozen fruit. Such wines, used to be referred to as ice wines, or depending on the local language of the region, ice wine or eiswein. Slovenian wine combines tradition, quality and an attractive price. It is one of the underrated destinations that every wine enthusiast should explore and be surprised by "eastern Burgundy."

Puklavec Win

eryOn the Wine.co.uk website, wine from Slovenia is represented by the Puklavec winery, a family-owned estate that in 1934 began extensive production in Ljutomer-Ormoz, a sub-region of Podravje, in the northeastern part of the country. Among the label selections were everyday wines from world varietals, such as a coupé of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot or a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, but there were also the winery's top items - IWCS medalists from mono-varietals Furminta and Pinot Grigio, sparkling Sauvignon Blanc and for dessert - the beautifully fragrant Yellow Muscat.
