The Rioja region produces mostly barrel-aged red wines, which is why Graciano wines most often captivate with an excellent finish of barrel accents - vanilla and sweet spices. Take a look at the list of red wines from the Graciano varietal, where detailed descriptions, high-quality photos and reviews of our customers will help you choose

.Origin of the Graciano varietalThe origin of

the name "graciano" speaks of two possibilities. Some say that the name comes from the word "gracia", meaning "joy" or "grace". Others claim that due to the rather demanding cultivation and low productivity of the vines, growers gave up on the possibility of growing the graciano strain saying "No, gracias!".

The largest number of grapevines of the Graciano strain are found in the Rioja region, where Graciano wines are used to create Rioja coupage, most often alongside Tempranillo and Grenache, giving the red wines a distinctive color and intense aroma. The grape is compared to Petit Verdot in Bordeaux blends - as a rule, it makes up a small share of the blends, but it is essential for creating a great, quality wine. Even a small amount of this strain is noticeable in blends. Graciano wines are extremely rare - the planting area in Spain is relatively small, as it is a demanding varietal, highly susceptible to disease and not very productive. It requires considerably more labor and attention from winemakers. The grapes ripen in a dry and warm climate, but the high temperature requires frequent watering and sprinkling of the vines. The skins of the fruit become hard very quickly and are very susceptible to damage and cracking, hence the importance of proper harvest time. The variety is not very popular among grape growers, who, finding it unprofitable to grow Graciano, have replaced the vines with Tempranillo or Cabernet Sauvignon. Fortunately, there remains that small percentage of winemakers who care for and produce excellent Graciano wines with precision and accuracy. It is also worth knowing that Graciano wines, aged in barrels, have incredible aging potential and can survive in the bottle for up to 20 years

.Characteristics of the grapeWines

created from the Graciano grape have an intense, deep red color with purple accents. The nose is characterized by violets, dark fruits, minerals and spices, sometimes also mint. On the palate, they are characterized by quite high acidity, a strong portion of fruitiness with some licorice and spicy accents. Being young wines - they can be quite pungent, but barrel aging and time contribute to a soft harmonious wine that is both an excellent complement to the tempranillo varietal and in a unique single-varietal position for those seeking new flavors. In the coupage, the wine guarantees an extremely expressive color and distinctive, strong tannins. The right combination of varietals in Rioja wines guarantees success and high scores in wine rankings.
