We invite you to explore the list of wines from Austria, where detailed descriptions, high-quality photos and the opinions of our customers will help you choose the right bottle.

Classification of Austrian winesWith

minor but fundamental differences, it is similar to the German classification and, like that one - is trying to reach the final shape, which makes it still difficult for many people to figure out. The lowest classification is table wines, or Tafelwein. Above it are regional wines, or Landwein. Above that are located quality wines, called Qualitätswein, whose elevated category is Kabinett. Next are Prädikatswein, or quality wines with a distinction, starting with Spätlese, followed by Auslese, Beerenauslese (BE), Strohwein, Ausbruch, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese (TBA). A separate gradation has only one region. - Wachau. In addition to the aforementioned gradations, the new DAC appellation designations are used in addition.

Grape VarietiesAustria

is associated primarily with white wines, and indeed has a great track record in this area. The emblematic variety is the autochthonous Grüner Veltliner varietal. The best white wines from Austria are also made from Riesling, Welschrieling, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Rotgipfler and other local varieties, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Chardonnay. Red wines are primarily Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Blauer Portugieser, Saint Laurent, and Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. An interesting feature is Blauer Wildbacher, which produces Silcher Sturm, a rosé wine sold just after fermentation.

Recommended winesAustrian wines

on our site are gaining popularity, and the most popular varietal is Grüner Veltliner, yielding distinctive wines that are lively, expressive and very aromatic, with spicy and herbal notes. We particularly recommend the Esterhazy Classic Beerenauslese Burgenland wine, which is made from late-harvested, ripest fruit affected by noble mold. It captivates with the subtle sweetness of honey, candied fruit, jam and quince with delicate minerality and an elegant hint of crispness. It is a coupage of two local varietals grown with great care and precision so that we can taste an excellent white sweet wine of superb quality with a thick, buttery texture. Riesling is another varietal that succeeds well here, offering wines that are nicely balanced, with good extractivity and acidity. Of the red varieties, one should certainly mention the typically tannic Zweigelt, the Blaufränkisch that matures quickly here, as well as Blauer Portugieser and Sankt Laurent.
