Initially, Airen was grown mainly in La Mancha and Valdepenas, but today the D.O. regulations also include this grape in Alicante, Jumilla and Bullas

.Characteristics of the grapeThe first

mention of the Airen grape dates back to 1615, and the name at the time was "Lairen". Wine from the Airen grape is characterized by a rounded structure and marked acidity. The aromas are dominated by notes of apples, pineapple, bananas with a hint of florality at the end. The mouthfeel is light and airy, making this a good choice for summer. In order to find the perfect wine balance, Airen is often blended with Viura, Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc varietals.

Due to its high heat tolerance and low water requirements, Airen is a strain ideal for very hot regions. That's why it does so well in Spain's La Mancha, giving a reasonable yield despite the conditions.

The sizable amount of sugar, as well as the short time for the fruit to reach its full potential after picking from the bush, make Airen largely used for brandy, as well as fortified wines such as Sherry and Malaga. The numerous seeds in the grape, in turn, are destined for oil production

.Pairing Airen with a mealThe

Airen

grape

yields a light-textured wine with non-dominant acidity and fruity character. As a result, it is a good companion for light fruit and vegetable salads, as well as delicate summer dishes.

At the same time, its rounded and calm character devoid of over-expression also makes Airen a very good direction when choosing a wine to enjoy on its own on a warm evening.Airen

- because it takes to tango...

Although Airen is a varietal that enjoys an unusually extensive area planted to vines, on its own it is used in coupage with other varietals to best effect, and in this form we usually encounter it. At the same time, it is an attractively priced wine, being thus an excellent candidate for a budget, casual meeting or for a quiet evening.

Also worth remembering are fortified wines, in which Airen is often present, as well as strong spirits in the form of brandy.
