Frizzante - types

The most popular bubbly is, of course, Italian Prosecco, but only in Italy are made many more types of sparkling wines, for example: Lambrusco, Franciacorta or Moscato D'Asti.

Lambrusco is a lightly sparkling red wine made from the grape variety of the same name. The Charmat method is used in the production of this wine. Traditionally it is a dry red wine (secco), but semi-sweet (amabile) and sweet (dolce) wines are also produced. The name lambrusco means "wild grape" and is protected by a geographical indication. It can only be used by winemakers from Emilia-Romagna and parts of Lombardy, thus making it the most famous sparkling wine of central and eastern Italy. Since 2013, winemakers from the Veneto and Piedmont regions have lost the ability to sell these wines. Sparkling Lambrusco is a frizzante wine that has a distinctive foam, a pleasant cherry color and an aroma of pink grapefruit. There are flavors of cherries and red currants. There is also a relatively low alcohol content (about 11-12%). Good frizzante wines are drunk fresh, either solo or accompanied by dishes. This type of wine will appeal to lovers of delicate red sparkling wines.

Franciacorta, is a type of wine produced by the classic method, which means that it undergoes two fermentations. The first fermentation of this wine takes place in barrels, while the second one is already in bottles (after adding a mixture of yeast and sugar). Thus, Franciacorta is produced using a similar method as champagnes, but with some differences. It is through this second fermentation that the wines become naturally slightly sparkling. This frizzante wine is made in north-central Italy, in Lombardy, in the geographical area just called Franciacorta. It is produced from grapes of the Chardonay or Pinot Noir varietals, less frequently from Pinot Blanc, and, as of the September 2017 harvest, also from the Erbamat variety - an endemic variety uniquely found in Lombardy. It is worth mentioning here that the red Pinot Noir varietal has an interesting effect on the color of this wine. Alcohol content at 12-13%. If you love the taste of champagne, try Franciacorta wine. It should pleasantly surprise you.

Another type is Moscato D'Asti white wine. This product is produced in the famous Piedmont, in the province of Asti, in the Moscato appellation, but also in smaller quantities in the provinces of Alessandria and Cuneo. It is created from Moscato Bianco grapes. They are characterized by an extremely low alcohol content. This white wine has a wonderful sweetness and the aforementioned very low alcohol content, which is achieved through the process of cooling the must during fermentation. The whole process comes almost to the freezing point. The maximum alcohol content according to the appellation's regulations is 5.5%. Each wine can have a different intensity of effervescence. It depends on the level of carbon dioxide whether it is a frizzante sparkling wine, whose pressure is between 1 and 2.5 bar, or a spumante - where the pressure is at a minimum of 3 bar. By comparison, in champagne it is twice as high. However, when we fancy a white wine with a refreshing taste and delicate bubbles, but with less strength, look for the term frizzante Moscato D'Asti wine on the labels. These good wines are delicate and very aromatic.

Frizzante - how to recognize it?

A frizzantewine does not have to stand out for anything special. Often there is not even such information on the label. It is best to ask about these wines in specialty stores. However, if we do not have such an opportunity, then remember. First, popular types of these sparkling wines are the aforementioned Lambrusco, Franciacorta and Moscato D'Asti. Secondly, the prices of frizzante can be slightly higher than other sparkling wines from Italy, because the place of creation increases their prestige. Piedmont, for example, is called the pearl of Italian winemaking and is famous for excellent wines such as Barolo, Barbaresco and just Moscato D'Asti. Attention. In the case of Lambrusco, there is also a frizzantino wine, i.e. a wine without bubbles at all.

The designation frizzante wine can also be seen on the labels of bottles from Spain or Chile. Sometimes even producers decide to present the sparkling character of the wine in graphic form. Specially designed wine labels immediately signal to the consumer that the wine will have bubbles. This is a much more universal sign than simply referring to these sparkling wines as frizzante wine.

Frizzante - for what occasions?

It will work well for many occasions, as it is very versatile. Many consumers choose it for weddings, for example. It functions as a sparkling wine at the beginning of the reception and later, throughout the event. However, importantly, these wines are not usually chosen for a toast - for this purpose, one tends to reach for clearer bubbles, such as proseco, cava or champagne. Nevertheless, frizzante wine is a must for wedding receptions.

Such lightly sparkling wine is also useful for parties and receptions during the summer season, as it is very refreshing. Mostly sweet taste of the wines but also this very refreshing character, as well as low alcohol content, make women reach for it willingly. That's why every women's party (for example, a bachelorette party), can't go without frianciacorta, lambrusco or other frizzante wine, which is prized for its taste. It is a great, sweet addition to a good party and for any budget.

What is the difference between frizzante wine and prosecco?

The main difference between frizzante wines and Italian prosecco wine is the level of effervescence, or the difference in pressure of each type of wine. The pressure in a bottle of frizzante wine does not exceed three Bars, while in a bottle of spumante it is at least three and a half Bars. Other differences include the length of the wines' effervescence (longer in prosecco), alcohol content, and the way the bottle is sealed.

Frizzante - price

Frizzante are good wines for every budget. Prices for these wines start as low as 12 zlotys and usually do not exceed 40 zlotys - except for wines from Piedmont, where the price can be slightly higher. These are good everyday wines and for different occasions depending on the need. They are opened for pleasure, intended to be drunk solo or accompanied by desserts. They can be found in good specialty stores.
